Apolactoferrin vs Holo-Lactoferrin: What Iron Saturation Means on a Label
Apolactoferrin vs holo-lactoferrin: one protein, two states.
The prefix is not a grade, a brand or a quality tier. It describes how much iron is bound to the protein — and it is the number most lactoferrin labels quietly omit.
They are the same protein at different iron saturations. Lactoferrin has two iron-binding sites. When most are empty it is called apolactoferrin; when they are largely filled it is holo-lactoferrin. Almost all supplement lactoferrin is apo, at roughly 10–20% saturation, whether or not the pack says so. Neither form has authorised health claims in the UK.
Why the state exists at all
Lactoferrin's defining feature is that it binds iron — that is what the "ferrin" is doing in the name. Each molecule has two binding sites, and how many are occupied at any moment depends on the iron available in its environment.
Lactoferrin isolated from milk is naturally low in saturation, which is why apolactoferrin is the default supplement material rather than a special processing step. Holo material is produced by deliberately saturating it. So the honest framing is not "which grade did the manufacturer choose" but "did they do anything to it at all".

Two things this does not mean
It does not make lactoferrin an iron supplement. The iron carried at supplement doses is tiny next to an actual iron product, and lactoferrin is not sold or labelled as a source of iron. If a product does declare iron as a nutrient, it appears in the nutrition information with an NRV percentage — and if it does not appear there, it is not being sold to you as iron.
It does not mean one form is better. We are not permitted to tell you that, and neither is anyone else, because lactoferrin has no authorised GB or EU health claims in any form. If a product page tells you holo outperforms apo, or the reverse, it is making an unauthorised claim — which tells you something useful about the seller, if not about the protein.
How to actually find out what you are buying
Ask for the specification sheet. Lactoferrin material specifications normally state protein purity and iron content or saturation together, because both matter to the buyer of the raw material even when they never reach the consumer label.
A brand that produces one on request is being straightforward with you. A brand that cannot, or will not, has told you where its documentation stops — which is worth knowing before you trust it on anything else. That standard applies to us too: our own label does not currently print a saturation figure, so ask and we will send what the specification says.
