PEA is palmitoylethanolamide — a fatty acid amide belonging to the N-acylethanolamine family, formed from palmitic acid and ethanolamine. It is produced endogenously in mammals, meaning your body makes it, and it occurs in small amounts in foods including egg yolk, soybean oil and peanut oil. It was first identified in the 1950s in exactly those sources. In a supplement it is supplied as a purified compound, not as an extract of eggs or soy.

It is not pea protein

Worth saying early, because the name collision genuinely misdirects people. Pea protein is a plant protein isolated from the seeds of Pisum sativum, sold by the kilogram for smoothies. PEA is palmitoylethanolamide, a lipid compound sold in capsules at hundreds of milligrams. They share three letters and nothing else — not the source, not the chemistry, not the use.

Where supplement PEA comes from

Manufacturing combines palmitic acid with ethanolamine to form the amide. Palmitic acid is a saturated fatty acid found widely in nature; the material used in production is typically plant-derived, most often from palm. That matters if you are avoiding animal-derived ingredients — as does the capsule shell, which is a separate question from the contents. Neither is safe to assume from the front of a pack, and both are reasonable things to ask a brand directly.

Why you keep seeing the word "micronised"

PEA is highly lipophilic — its log P is above 5 — and practically insoluble in water. Since a compound generally has to dissolve before it can be absorbed, the amount that ends up available is limited by how readily it dissolves, and dissolution rate depends heavily on particle size. Smaller particles mean more surface area exposed to the surrounding fluid.

So manufacturers mill it. Micronised and ultra-micronised grades are the products of that process, and they are the grades that appear in most published clinical protocols.

The physical chemistry above is not in dispute. What that means for an outcome in a person is a different question, one the evidence base has not settled — which is why no health claim for PEA has been authorised in the UK or EU.

What a UK supplement is allowed to say about PEA

Two separate rules apply, and the second is stricter than most people realise.

Health claims. There are no authorised GB or EU health claims for palmitoylethanolamide. Statements linking it to a health benefit are unauthorised, full stop.

Medicinal claims. A claim that a product treats, prevents or relieves a disease or symptom is a medicinal claim. A food supplement may not make one at all — not with better evidence, not with a disclaimer. Language about relieving pain or reducing inflammation sits on the wrong side of that line, regardless of what the research says.

The practical consequence for a reader: a compliant PEA label tells you what the product is — compound, milligrams, grade, purity — and not what it does. If you are shopping for PEA, the pack telling you least about benefits may be the one being most careful with everything else.
