What turkesterone actually is
Turkesterone is a phytoecdysteroid — one of a family of steroid-like compounds that plants produce naturally. Ecdysteroids are the plant analogues of the hormones some insects and crustaceans use to moult, but in humans they are simply plant compounds taken as food supplements. Turkesterone is one of the more talked-about members of this family, alongside its close relative ecdysterone (20-hydroxyecdysone).

Where turkesterone comes from
Turkesterone is concentrated in Ajuga turkestanica, a plant native to the mountains of Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan. The extract is typically made from the plant's aerial parts. Ecdysteroids are also found in other plants such as Rhaponticum carthamoides (maral root) and spinach, but Ajuga turkestanica is the source associated specifically with turkesterone.
Chemically, turkesterone is very similar to ecdysterone, differing by an extra hydroxyl group. The two are often confused or used interchangeably in marketing, but they are distinct compounds — worth knowing when comparing labels.
Standardisation & forms
With turkesterone, the number that matters most on a label is the standardisation percentage — how much actual turkesterone the extract is verified to contain. Most products are standardised to around 10% turkesterone, so a 500 mg serving of a 10% extract provides roughly 50 mg of turkesterone itself. A higher extract weight with no stated percentage tells you very little.
You will also see turkesterone offered as a cyclodextrin complex (often "hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin" or HPBCD).
