Quick answer

Read the serving, then do the arithmetic.

There is no official recommended intake for TUDCA. What you can establish is how much is in a daily serving of a given product and how that compares with the amounts human studies used. Our Premium TUDCA 1100mg states 1100mg per serving in a 60-capsule pack sold as a 30-day supply. Background: what is TUDCA.

UK regulatory status — read this first

TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is sold in the UK as a food supplement, with no authorised UK or EU health claims. It sits close to the medicines boundary: its parent bile acid, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), is a licensed prescription-only medicine in the UK, and TUDCA itself is a licensed medicine in some EU countries, including Italy. Whether a product is a food or a medicine depends on what it contains and how it is presented, so no TUDCA product should make liver, bile or digestive claims. We have not been able to confirm a published novel food status decision for TUDCA.

What studies used

Doses in human studies.

These are the doses two published human trials used. We describe them by design and deliberately do not summarise outcomes. They are research doses, given under study conditions, and they are not recommendations.

Study Population TUDCA dose Duration Design
Kars et al., 2010
Diabetes 59(8):1899–1905
20 adults with obesity 1750mg a day 4 weeks Randomised, placebo-controlled
Elia et al., 2016
European Journal of Neurology 23:45–52
34 adults with ALS already on prescribed treatment 1000mg twice a day (2000mg) 54 weeks Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled

The second trial was run in patients under specialist medical care, which is a medicines setting, not food supplement use. We include it only to show the dose and duration studied. We do not give dosing by age, sex or goal; if you have a medical condition or take medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking TUDCA.

How to read a label

Reading a TUDCA serving.

Labels can state TUDCA per capsule or per serving, and a serving can be one capsule or several. Three numbers settle it:

Label number Where to find it What to do with it
TUDCA per serving Nutrition or supplement facts panel This is your daily amount, if you take one serving
Capsules per serving Directions for use Divide the per-serving figure by this to get mg per capsule
Capsules per pack Front of pack or panel Divide by capsules per serving to get servings, or days, per pack

Make sure the figure is TUDCA, not a total blend weight; the best TUDCA supplement UK guide covers what else to check.

Grams to capsules

The arithmetic for our TUDCA.

Our listing states 1100mg per serving, 60 capsules, and a 30-day supply. Sixty capsules over 30 days is two capsules a day, which puts each capsule at 550mg if the serving is two capsules. Check the directions on your label for the serving size.

To compare with a study dose, divide the study's daily figure by the mg per capsule. At 550mg a capsule, 1100mg is two capsules; the 1750mg and 2000mg study doses would not divide into whole capsules and are above our stated serving. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose on the label.

Arithmetic only, not advice on how much to take. Food supplements should be taken as directed on the pack.

FAQs

TUDCA dosage FAQ.

There is no official recommended intake for TUDCA, and we do not give personal dosing advice. Take any product as directed on its label and do not exceed the stated daily dose. If you have a medical condition or take medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist first.
Two published randomised trials used 1750mg a day for 4 weeks (Kars et al., 2010, 20 adults with obesity) and 1000mg twice a day for 54 weeks (Elia et al., 2016, 34 adults with ALS on prescribed treatment). These are study doses, not recommendations.
The listing states 1100mg per serving, with 60 capsules sold as a 30-day supply. That works out at two capsules a day and 550mg per capsule if the serving is two capsules; see the label for the serving size.
For our Premium TUDCA, two capsules, if the serving is two capsules of 550mg each. For any other product, divide the mg per serving by the capsules per serving to get mg per capsule.
No. TUDCA is UDCA joined to the amino acid taurine. UDCA (ursodeoxycholic acid) is a licensed prescription-only medicine in the UK, while TUDCA is sold as a food supplement. Their doses are not interchangeable. See what is TUDCA.
It is sold in the UK as a food supplement with no authorised health claims. It sits near the medicines boundary because UDCA is a prescription-only medicine in the UK and TUDCA is a licensed medicine in some EU countries. Products should not make liver, bile or digestive claims.
Follow the directions on your product's label. We do not give timing advice beyond what the label states.
About this guide

Last reviewed 5 October 2026 by the Vitality Supplements Editorial Team, written to our editorial standards. We make and sell Premium TUDCA 1100mg, the product used in the arithmetic on this page. Product figures are taken from its listing; where the listing does not state a figure we say "see label". Studies are described by design only. First published 5 October 2026.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the stated recommended daily dose. TUDCA is sold as a food supplement in the UK; ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a prescription-only medicine and is not the same product. No authorised UK or EU health claims exist for TUDCA, and no liver, bile or digestive claims are made. No medicinal, disease or anti-ageing claims are made. Not suitable for children. Consult a healthcare professional before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical supervision. General information, not medical advice. See our disclaimer.
