Which reframes the question. "Ubiquinol or CoQ10?" isn't like choosing between two ingredients — it's closer to asking whether to buy water as ice or as liquid, when your body is going to do what it does with it regardless.

Why The Price Gap

Ubiquinol is harder to keep intact.

The reduced form is reactive by nature — that's what being the reduced form means. Expose ubiquinol to air and it starts drifting back toward ubiquinone. So making a ubiquinol product that's still ubiquinol when you open it requires stabilisation and protective encapsulation through manufacture, filling and storage.

Ubiquinone has no such problem. It's a stable crystalline powder, cheap to produce, with a long shelf life. That manufacturing difference — not any authorised difference in effect — is what the price gap reflects.

Why most research used ubiquinone

CoQ10 has been studied for decades. Stabilised ubiquinol only became commercially available much later, so the great majority of the published literature used ubiquinone. That's a plain fact about the evidence base — and since no health claim is authorised for CoQ10 in either form, we're not going to characterise what any of that research found.

It does mean one thing worth noticing though: the more expensive form is the one with less behind it, which is the reverse of how the category is usually presented.

An ingredient with no authorised claims is commercially awkward, and the temptation to describe it anyway is strong. But a brand willing to make unauthorised claims on the front of a pack is telling you something about the parts of its labelling you can't check.

So why do some CoQ10 packs carry claims anyway?

Because the claim usually belongs to something else in the formula.

Vitamin C is the classic example. Unlike CoQ10, vitamin C has authorised claims and a Nutrient Reference Value of 80mg. A serving providing at least 15% of that — 12mg — clears the threshold to carry them.

Which is why you'll see ubiquinol products formulated with exactly 12mg of vitamin C — including ours. That's not a coincidence or a rounding: it's the precise minimum that lets the product lawfully carry a health claim.

Nothing improper about it — it's a real ingredient at a real functional level, and the claim is genuinely earned by the vitamin C. But it's worth understanding what you're reading. The claim on the front of a CoQ10 pack is a vitamin C claim, not a CoQ10 claim, and the ingredient in the product name isn't the one doing the legal work.

A useful habit on any supplement pack: find which ingredient a claim actually attaches to. It's often not the headline one.
